The Volunteer Center of Dallas County has provided some suggestions.

  • The Child Care Group, 214-860-7911: Operates day-care centers, manages public subsidies for child care in North Texas and conducts training for child-care workers.
  • Dallas CASA, 214-827-8961: An advocate for children involved in the juvenile-family court system.
  • Dallas Healthy Start, 214-654-4500: Works to reduce infant mortality and achieve a high rate of healthy births.
  • Low Birth Weight Development Center, 214-495-0641: Aids high-risk, low-birth-weight infants and their indigent, adolescent parents.
  • Metroplex Mentor Center/Volunteer Center of Dallas County, 214-826-6767: Promotes and recruits mentors for youth.
  • Mi Escuelita, Inc., 214-526-0220: A preschool that exposes children of other languages to English.
  • My Guardian Angel, 214-887-0069: Provides support groups for kids going through divorce, death and abandonment.

LEND A HAND

  • Buy products from companies that give proceeds to children's causes.
  • Contact your elected official to urge their support of legislation that benefits children.
  • Give your time to nearby schools or children's church programs.
  • Volunteer to baby-sit a child of a neighbor in need.
  • Donate your talents - office, clerical work, data entry, accounting, bookkeeping, marketing, public relations, newsletter production - for groups that aid children.
  • Lead support groups for children, teenagers or parents. Read to a child.
  • Donate clothing, toys and children's supplies to your favorite children's charity.
  • Become a mentor to a child as a tutor, troop leader, coach, club sponsor, big brother/sister.
