At Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas, we believe that the path to a successful career begins with inspiration. That’s why we were thrilled to partner with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide a group of aspiring young engineers from Dubiski Career High School with a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to build our city’s infrastructure.

On September 23rd, students stepped out of the classroom and onto a live construction site, visiting the TxDOT Dallas District Office and the massive I-635/US-80 interchange project. This immersive experience was designed to accelerate their understanding of the civil engineering field and showcase the incredible career opportunities available right here in our community.

The visit gave students an up-close view of the complex processes behind major highway construction. They walked on newly constructed bridges, learned about the foundational elements of a stable bridge—from the columns drilled deep into the earth to the caps that support the road—and saw firsthand the materials that hold our city together.

One student reflected on the scale of the project, noting their surprise for what seemed like a simple reconstruction. “Watching these labs and construction up close made me realize and appreciate the amount of effort that is actually put into our city and everyday lives, that is not seen through the normal eye,” they shared.

The tour didn’t stop at the construction site. Students also visited TxDOT’s materials lab, where they witnessed the rigorous testing that ensures the safety and effectiveness of materials like soil, asphalt, and concrete. From watching a 300°F asphalt sample tested for water absorption to seeing how concrete is tested for compressive strength, the students gained a new appreciation for the science that underpins every project.

The experience clearly left a lasting impression. As another student put it, “The field trip gave me a better understanding of how engineering materials are tested and the different career paths available at TxDOT.” For many, it was a pivotal moment in their career exploration. “What I can take away from this field trip is what type of projects or a ‘day in a life’ I would experience if I continue to pursue a Civil Engineering career, and it was very interesting and fascinating,” a student said.

We are immensely grateful to the team at the Texas Department of Transportation for their exceptional hospitality and for providing such a detailed, impactful tour. By opening their doors, they have helped ignite a passion for innovation and problem-solving in the next generation of our workforce.

Partnerships like this are at the heart of what we do. By connecting students with industry leaders, we are building a stronger, more skilled talent pipeline for the future of Dallas County.
