Workforce development is a team sport. No single organization, agency, or business can meet the rapidly evolving demands of our regional economy alone. True success happens when we break down silos to convene partners, align resources, and connect local talent directly with market opportunity.
A powerful example of this impact is Wesley Burton. After navigating the unique challenges that justice-involved individuals face when re-entering the workforce, Wesley completed our Prologis training program, earned his forklift certification, and quickly secured full-time employment. While Wesley notes that finding a job after being justice-involved is challenging, his relentless drive to succeed has only grown. Today, he continues to pursue further education and training, embodying the exact resilience and potential our partnerships aim to unlock.
When workforce boards, employers, educators, and community leaders align around a shared vision, we create sustainable pathways that change lives while strengthening the local economy.
This collaborative approach has served us well in a variety of different initiatives. We recently brought regional leaders together and showcased these partnerships in action at the Redbird Workforce Center. Here’s an overview of the examples we shared to illustrate what happens when partners collaborate to build industry-driven talent pipelines.
The Blueprint: The Walmart Mechatronics Pipeline
One of our standout success models began as a conversation at the 2023 Inland Port Symposium. Walmart’s Automated Distribution Center faced a critical challenge: they needed a highly skilled pipeline of maintenance technicians and mechatronics talent. Traditional recruiting methods simply weren’t enough to meet the high demand.
Instead of working in isolation, a network including Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas, Dallas College, Walmart, Inland Port organizations, Texas Veterans representatives, and community partners stepped up to design a customized solution.
- The Employer’s Role: Walmart clearly defined their hiring and technical requirements.
- The Educator’s Role: Dallas College compressed a traditional curriculum into an intensive, 13-week fast-track training program tailored to those specific employer needs.
- The Facilitator’s Role: WFSDallas conducted targeted outreach to unemployed workers with transferable skills, leveraging WorkInTexas and local community networks. We pre-screened candidates and provided rigorous interview preparation, including specialized STAR interview coaching.
The Result? We identified more than 100 qualified candidates, presented 40 to Walmart, and 15 were successfully selected and onboarded. Walmart deemed the initiative a complete success proving that training combined with intentional candidate preparation works.
The Walmart initiative demonstrated the power of an employer-driven, partnership-based approach to workforce development. By bringing together a dedicated network to align resources around an employer’s precise needs, this collaboration created a fast-track pathway into sustainable careers. This proven framework provides a blueprint that can be used to tackle other high-demand, difficult-to-fill occupations across Dallas County and throughout Texas
Scaling Success: Prologis and Google STAR
The mechatronics pipeline is just one piece of the puzzle. Our public-private partnerships allow us to innovate, pilot new approaches, and help individuals overcome systemic barriers to employment.
Both the Prologis Community Workforce Initiative and the Google STAR Program exemplify this approach, serving as premier models of how targeted training can align with regional infrastructure demands. By providing hands-on instruction and critical certifications, these initiatives turn rapidly growing industries into accessible, stable career pathways for local talent.
- Prologis Community Workforce Initiative: Since 2020, this initiative has enrolled 6,498 individuals and placed 3,411 people directly into logistics careers. It has enabled participants to complete nearly 11,000 online courses and earn 772 forklift certifications. This outstanding impact earned recognition from the Texas Economic Development Council for Workforce Excellence.
- Google STAR Program: Since 2023, this program provides critical fiber optic and telecommunications training aligned with data center needs. With 42 individuals enrolled so far, the program boasts a stellar 70% employment rate among completers including 8 veterans served. Like the Prologis initiative, it was also recognized by the Texas Economic Development Council for Workforce Excellence.
Building the Future Together
While the data is validating, the real heartbeat of this work is found in the individual stories of the job seekers whose lives have been transformed, and the employers who are thriving because they have the talent they need.
Seeing our partnerships in action from the moment a job seeker walks through our doors to the hands-on robotics programming happening at Dallas College’s Mechatronics Training Facility is a powerful reminder of what is possible.
Our future vision is simple: we want to replicate and expand these proven, industry-driven models across every corner of Dallas County. But we cannot do it alone.
