This National Hire a Veteran Day, Workforce Solutions Greater Dallas (WFSDallas) and the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) are proud to honor the service, leadership, and unwavering determination of our military veterans. Transitioning from military service or navigating unexpected career shifts in the job market can be challenging.

Akelah Roberts’ story is a powerful testament to why specialized veteran workforce support matters, and why perseverance in the job search always pays off.

Akelah entered the job search with an extraordinary set of qualifications: military service, multiple advanced degrees including two bachelor’s degrees and an MBA, several professional HR certifications, and extensive Human Resources experience.

However, following an unexpected layoff last year, Akelah found herself navigating a tough job market. Despite submitting hundreds of applications and participating in numerous interview rounds over several months, the prolonged search was challenging. Akelah remained determined, knowing that her skills, background, and dedication held immense value.

To strengthen her job search, Akelah seeked guidance from TVC and WFSDallas.

Rather than navigating the process alone, she gained access to dedicated support who understands the unique strengths veterans bring to the workplace. TVC and WFSDallas provided comprehensive, hands-on support, including:

  • Tailored Career Counseling: Strategic guidance to refine her positioning and stay focused on executive-level opportunities.
  • Resume & Personal Branding Optimization: Ensuring her extensive military background, advanced credentials, and HR leadership were highlighted effectively to prospective employers.
  • Targeted Job Leads & Referrals: Connecting her directly with veteran-friendly employers seeking  leadership talent.
  • Interview Coaching & Prep: Helping her articulate her value with clarity and confidence.
  • Consistent Follow-Up & Encouragement: Providing ongoing, dedicated touchpoints to keep her positive throughout a challenging transition.

Akelah’s relentless drive, paired with the dedicated support of TVC and WSFSDallas, led to victory: she successfully landed a full-time position as a Human Resource Manager with a prominent organization.

Reflecting on her journey, Akelah shared a powerful message for fellow veterans walking a similar path:

“To every veteran who is searching for their next opportunity: don’t let today’s ‘no’ convince you that tomorrow’s ‘yes’ isn’t coming. Your service, resilience, and perseverance matter, and the right opportunity is worth the wait.” — Akelah Roberts, TVC Program Participant.

Connecting Veterans to Success

Akelah’s journey demonstrates that behind every successful transition is a combination of individual resilience and strong community support.
